My golden doodle had a lesion on his tail. After much googling and chat gpt-ing, I recognized it was stud tail, or Supracaudal gland inflammation. The treatment recommended chlorhexadine, and it also says sometimes the area can get inflamed and cause cysts. I called Upper Valley and told the kind front office the problem, asked if they had chlorhexadine shampoo and if that was something I needed an RX for. She said they had it in office and booked my dog for an appointment. When I went in, the vet had zero clue what this was. I told them it was stud tail and he told me he had never heard of it. He said it looked like a skin thing that since it wasn’t seeming to bother my dog, to just leave it because any treatment would probably irritate it and lead to infection, and that if it developed an infection or cyst to come back and do surgery. That it wasn’t anything “curable”. I told him what the recommended treatment was, and he said it would possibly cause more problems but I could try it if I wanted. He said he would look more in to it and for me to tell him how it worked… he handed me two bottles to decide between then I went up to the front desk with the bottle I chose. They told me my total was $65. My eyebrows raised because a visit where I made the diagnosis and told HIM the treatment, plus the shampoo seemed steep but whatever. Until they said “oh, he forgot to add the shampoo. So that’s 23 more dollars.” I’m sorry. So 88 dollars for a 5 minute appointment where I told the vet what was going on and what the recommended treatment was, and where he then told me what I’ve researched and seems to be common knowledge to vets has never been seen by him (and yes I reported back to Chat and it kindly said find another vet, that’s weird that he had never heard of it as it’s extremely common…) plus a shampoo? If he had been the one to diagnose and recommend treatment I understand $65 for a limited exam. But he told me less than nothing I didn’t already know. My other vet I paid less for a check up and vaccinations. Back to my vet 30 minutes away I go. Such a bummer after all of the raving reviews.
